The HIFU Procedure: What To Expect
Inflammation Phase (0-48 hours)
- Hemostasis: The hemostasis phase starts as soon as your HIFU procedure is complete. The initial reaction is to stop minor bleeding and stabilise the treated areas.
- Skin coagulation: In this phase, ultrasound energy causes local coagulation of the skin layer. It initiates the healing process by causing small areas of controlled thermal damage.
- Cell migration: The natural healing response starts when cells migrate to the treated areas, where repair and regeneration begin.
Proliferative Phase (2 days–6 weeks)
- Granulation tissue: Your skin forms new tissue. Granulation tissue is rich in new blood vessels and collagen and repairs the treated areas.
- Wound contraction: When the granulation tissue matures, the wound contracts, helping to tighten and smoothen the skin.
- Collagen synthesis: Collagen production surges at this stage. The HIFU energy produced from the treatment stimulates the deep dermis layer and encourages the production of new collagen, which helps the skin stay firm and elastic.
Remodelling Phase (3 weeks–months)
- Collagen rearrange: Newly formed collagen is then remodelled, reorganising collagen fibres into a much more structured and aligned formation.
- Strength increase: As collagen matures and strengthens, it can help improve skin tightness and firmness, enhancing its elasticity.
- Skin lifting effect: By stimulating collagen production and remodelling, the treatment may help improve skin tightness over time. This can lead to a more defined appearance of facial contours and reduced sagging.
The ultrasound energy travels through your skin after the treatment, and new collagen is set in motion, helping to tighten and firm up the skin. This new collagen requires about 4 to 6 hours to fully build up as your skin continues to activate collagen production; individual results may vary. When this happens, you may notice the skin gradually becoming smoother and firmer.
What You Should Know Before Your HIFU Treatment in Singapore
How does HIFU Treatment work?
HIFU provides a non-invasive approach to facial lifting and skin tightening. HIFU treatment uses a medical-grade HIFU machine to penetrate focused ultrasound energy deep into the skin. This ultrasound energy reaches up to the two layers: the superficial dermis (the outer layer of the skin) and the deep dermis (inner) layers that function in thermal coagulation points where collagen production occurs. As new collagen forms, it tightens and firms the skin.
BEFORE HIFU
Before the treatment, an initial consultation is needed where your skin condition is evaluated, and the treatment goals will be tailored by the professionals to make a suitable treatment for you.
Although HIFU treatment is tolerable, you can request topical anaesthesia, a numbing cream, for additional comfort, as well as an oral pain killer before the treatment. Then, a cold gel solution will be applied to your skin in the treated area to help the ultrasonic waves move smoothly.
DURING HIFU
You will be assisted to lie down comfortably by your aesthetic doctor, who will use a medical grade hifu device that will thoroughly focus the ultrasound energy on targeted areas to ensure precise treatment.
AFTER THE HIFU
After the HIFU treatment, you may experience a little downtime, like mild swelling or skin redness, but this is temporary and normally disappears in a few hours.
You can be back to your normal routine soon after the procedure is over.
Reminder: Results may vary depending on your skin type and the area treated. But most patients see immediate results, but full effects will develop over the next few months as collagen regeneration takes place. So, be sure to be consistent with your maintenance sessions.
