Non-invasive, non-surgical ultrasound to lift and tighten face and neck areas
Ultherapy, also popularly known as Ulthera（超声刀）or HIFU, is a non-invasive, non-surgical ultrasound treatment that tightens one’s loose skin in the face and neck areas. It is the only FDA approved medical treatment in Singapore exclusively designed for non-surgical, non-invasive face lifting and tightening. The quick and effective procedure, with minimal to no downtime, is one of the most performed facelifting procedures worldwide, making it the preferred treatment for busy city-dwellers.
How Ultherapy works
Ulterapy, with the Ulthera system, uses high intensity microfocused ultrasound (also known as HIFU, a type of heat energy) to stimulate the body in renewing and replacing existing collagen under the skin. The end result is a firmer, more toned and visibly tightened skin tone around the face and neck areas.
Ultherapy bypasses a person’s superficial skin and delivers only the optimal amount of ultrasound energy to deep tissues; the very same tissues that are targeted in surgical/invasive facelift procedures. The ultrasound is meticulously controlled to reach only the correct depths and heat levels.
At the optimal temperature of approximately 60-70°C, regeneration of new collagen levels is stimulated without incision or disruption to skin surface. The process is the body’s natural response to the heat.
Results are visibly and significantly pronounced over time.

Difference between Ultherapy and lasers
Lasers mainly target the superficial areas of the skin, e.g. on the surface where lines, wrinkles and pigmentation are. Ultherapy, on the other hand, targets the deep skin tissues that support and provide lift to the skin. Ultherapy is a process that uses the body’s own natural mechanism to regenerate collagen levels in the skin.
Can a Ultherapy treatment substitute traditional surgical facelift?
Ultherapy, strictly speaking, is more of an ‘uplift’ than ‘facelift’. While the procedure is fundamentally different in nature to surgical facelift and may not be considered a complete ‘substitute’, the results acquired from each treatment are mainly the same. Ultherapy provides an alternative to traditional surgical facelift minus the risks of going under the knife. It is considered a much safer yet equally effective procedure by many.
With Ultherapy, what kind of results should I expect?
Ultherapy stimulates the deep skin tissues to regenerate new collagen levels in the skin. The process from within reconditions the tissues to provide better lift and support to the upper skin for visibly tighter, firmer looking skin. Clients often report a fresher look. Significantly tighter skin can also be felt in areas of the neck and face. The result is firmer looking and better toned skin be it in the mirror or in the eyes of third parties. While medically an Ultherapy may not be considered an exact substitute for surgical facelift, people who wish to achieve the same results without the risks and distress of surgery may opt to go through this safer and effective treatment that is also more economically viable.
What to expect during an Ultherapy treatment?
The surface of the skin is first thoroughly cleansed. Anesthesia cream is then applied on the areas where ultherapy ultrasound is to be applied. Once this is done, the ultrasound device is turned on to supply controlled heat to pre-marked areas of the neck and face. The heat supplied gradually and gently stimulates the deep tissues of the skin to generate new levels of collagen. Last but not least, a gentle light treatment is done to facilitate the healing process of the skin.
How long does each Ultherapy treatment last?
Typically, Ultherapy for the entire face and neck area may take approximately 45-60 minutes. Ultherapy for specific portions of the face and neck may range from 30 – 45 minutes.
Is Ultherapy treatment painful?
Ultherapy treatment is very tolerable. One may experience mild levels of discomfort during application of ultrasound energy. This is however only a sign that the collagen stimulation process has started.
There may be low levels of discomfort or aching sensation around the targeted area after treatment. This is expected to resolve within 7-14 days.
Is there any downtime when doing Ultherapy?
There is no downtime when doing a non-invasive and non-surgical Ultherapy treatment. Clients typically may go back to their daily routine as soon as the treatment has ended.
There may be mild redness around the treatment area. This, however, tends to resolve quickly as well.
WHICH AREAS ARE SUITABLE FOR ULTHERAPY TREATMENT
Treatment regime is customised and tailored to individual’s need and desired outcome. Our doctor will assess your facial anatomy and discuss with you the recommended Ultherapy treatment regime.
Common problems that can be treated with Ultherapy:
- Droopy eye brows
- Saggy cheeks
- Nasolabial folds
- Marionette lines
- Saggy neck
- Loose skin under the chin
- Loose skin/wrinkles around the chest area (décolletage)
How long does the results last?
Most patients experience improvement after 1 session of Ultherapy. Improvement is gradual and progressive.
However, ageing is a continuous process. Therefore, some patients may need repeated treatment after 1 year, others may need another treatment after a longer interval.
This really varies from person to person, depending on individual’s skin quality and condition as well as the response to Ultrasound and collagen-building process.
Is Ultherapy safe? Will there be any side effects? What happens after Ultherapy?
More than 1 million people have undergone the Ultherapy treatment worldwide and reported zero side effects. The ultrasound technology used in Ultherapy has also been tested and proven to be very safe for medical treatment.
Right after an Ultherapy treatment there may be mild soreness and redness; these usually resolve by itself within the first 60 minutes of treatment completion. Make up may even be applied right after an Ultherapy treatment as there is no incision made to the skin. People who have undergone the treatment may go back to their daily routine right after. No particular care is required on the targeted areas, post-treatment. You may be recommended by your doctor to avoid going under the sun or certain skincare products for a certain period of time.
Ultherapy is a fast, simple and effective aesthetic treatment. You can expect firmer and tighter skin over a period of 2-3 months after treatment. This happens as existing levels of collagen are progressively replaced by newer, stronger levels of collagen. As this process continues, you may even experience its tightening and firming effects up to 6 months after treatment.
What other treatment works well with Ultherapy?
Ultherapy is a powerful face lifting and tightening treatment on its own.
It can be combined with other treatment to achieve better face lifting results:
- RF skin tightening & lifting treatment
- Dermal Fillers
- Thread Lift
- Jaw slimming – combined with Ultherapy for V face lifting
- FDA approved
- Good safety profile
- Non-surgical, non-invasive
- No downtime
- Takes just 60-90 minutes for a full face treatment
- Measurable results after just 1 single treatment
What should I do to prepare for an Ultherapy treatment? How many treatments should I expect?
If you are expecting an Ultherapy treatment, consider avoiding sun exposure at least 2 weeks prior to the treatment. Avoid using Retin A or similar skincare products at least 3 days before your treatment.
A person typically may expect just one treatment to achieve his or her desired results. Some, however, may benefit from multiple sessions, also dependent on the conditions of one’s skin. Do check with your doctor on the number of recommended treatments.
