The importance of feeling good about our appearance became ever-so-apparent during the repeated lockdowns of 2021. The realisation that getting dressed, brushing your hair and sticking on some lipstick genuinely made you feel like you had a purpose drove that point home unlike any other moment in time.

Then there was ‘Zoom face’. Have you ever been so fed up with looking at yourself in your life? We’re vain, but even we have not looked at ourselves more than this past year, as we barrel through meeting after digital meeting. The realisation that your skin is showing signs of ageing, or that you’re looking less-than-fresh crept up on you, making you ask aloud: “what can I do for my skin?”

Profhilo Review: Back to (Skincare) Beauty Basics

Well, let’s start by going back to the basics of what makes our skin look and feel great. Of course, we could suggest lots of different treatments, and tell you how they could benefit your skin in different ways, but a good starting point is to make sure you’ve got some good basics going. By basics, I mean a few staple skincare products you should use at home.

We’ve spoken about these products at some length: Keep your skin plump and hydrated with a hyaluronic acid serum. Slow down the signs of ageing with a daily SPF and use a retinol cream to help to cope with breakouts and smooth wrinkles.

It is super important to look after your skin with these daily creams. However, topical creams have a limit to how much they can correct your skin concern. Realistically, you are unlikely to get the same result from cream as you will from clinical anti-ageing treatments.

So what treatment options are there to give your skin a youthful boost and give you your glow back? One of our favourites here at S Aesthetics Clinic is Profhilo. This treatment was dubbed the ‘injectable moisturiser’ when it launched and had US beauty journalists leaping at the treatment. Let’s explore this treatment a little further…

Who would benefit from Profhilo?

There are no real restrictions as Profhilo injectable treatments can be used to prevent signs of ageing and to intensely hydrate the skin. However, it is most used in the clinic to correct signs of ageing on the face, neck, chest and hands.

You may benefit from a Profhilo injectable treatment if you have lines and wrinkles, or if your skin lacks elasticity, becomes thin, and lacks plumpness. You can also use Profhilo if you have some sun damage, would like to rehydrate your skin, or are looking for a way to maintain healthy, youthful-looking skin.

Collagen and Elastin: Is Profhilo better than Botox?

Profhilo is an entirely new category of injectable treatment so it cannot be compared to Botox (or filler) as its purpose is entirely different.

Profhilo is not similar to Botox in any way other than that it is an injectable treatment. Anti-wrinkle injections like Botox work on the muscles, not the skin. It relaxes the targeted muscles, reducing the movement of those muscles. This reduces lines such as those on your forehead or crow’s feet around your eyes.

Profhilo is also not filler; dermal fillers are generally made from quite a thick hyaluronic acid gel which is used in areas that have lost volume, such as your lips or cheeks, and to fill wrinkles such as those that can form around the top lip (‘smokers lines’) or the marionette lines.

Hyaluronic Acid & Difference between Profhilo and Dermal fillers?

It’s quite easy to see why there’s some confusion surrounding the difference between dermal fillers and Profhilo. After all, both are made of hyaluronic acid (HA). As mentioned before, fillers use a thick HA gel which is injected into depressions in the skin, or to rebuild volume in areas that have lost it, such as in the cheeks or under the eyes.

Profhilo is also made of HA, it is special in that it combines both high and low molecular weight HA. Which is then thermally stabilised, turning the two molecules into one compound.

The reason this is important, and differentiates it from the ‘normal’ HA in your fillers, is that once Profhilo is injected into your skin, its gorgeous honey-like consistency allows it to slowly spread throughout the area you want to rejuvenate, triggering ‘bioremodelling’- stimulating four different types of collagen and elastin in your skin as it goes, resulting in a smoother, firmer, more youthful-looking, glowing skin.

Is Profhilo worth it? Profhilo Before and After Anti Ageing Effects

This is a personal decision. If you are looking for the results that surgery might bring you, like a facelift, then you might not choose Profhilo. Even though your skin will benefit from the deep hydration and stimulation of collagen and elastin, you will not achieve the same results from this non-surgical treatment as you would from surgery.

If you are looking for glowing skin and a more natural-looking way to improve your skin and signs of ageing, then Profhilo is absolutely worth exploring.

If you have any questions specifically about your skin and how Profhilo might affect you, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Profhilo Treatment: how long does it take to work?

The results aren’t immediate. Using injectable Profhilo as a method of skincare entails two treatments that are 30 days apart, and each set of injections consists of five small injections on each side of your face. You may experience small bumps, much like an insect bite or bee sting, at the injection sites. These are very easy to cover and can take up to 24 hours to settle.

Profhilo injections come in the form of two treatments and are a month apart from one another. In the 30 days after each set of hyaluronic acid injections, your skin works hard to produce new, bouncy collagen and elastin.

Profhilo gives your skin a firmer, smoother and plumper complexion. The full results of your Profhilo injections are seen only after the second session as your skin produces more collagen and elastin. However, changes are often noticed after the first set of hyaluronic acid injections.

long pulse laser for acne

Medical aesthetic ‘tweakments’ have become increasingly popular in the last few years. From Botox and fillers to lasers and skin injectables, people have come to accept and embrace treatments that subtly enhance features and rejuvenate faces and complexion.

Amongst the latest, Profhilo is one of the latest up-and-coming anti-ageing ‘tweakment’ of the hyaluronic acid skin injectables in the market. Unlike the existing hyaluronic acid skin injectables like fillers and skin boosters in the market, Profhilo not only improves hydration and plumps up your visage; it is also unique in that it can counteract wrinkles and sagging of skin by stimulating bio-remodelling of collagen and elastin structures in the skin.

The highly-raved Profhilo is made of 100% pure hyaluronic acid (HA) which is a natural component of human skin. HA can bind water up to 1,000 its own weight, which is why HA skin treatments are often touted as ‘injectable moisture’. However, not all HAs are made equal. Because of the unique thermal crosslinking process used to link the short and long-chain hyaluronic acid in Profhilo instead of binding agents such as BDDE, as well as its high HA concentration, Profhilo stimulates natural collagen and elastin production in the skin, which helps it increase the elasticity of the skin while reducing wrinkles and sagging as well as increase skin hydration.

Profhilo also has the advantage of having almost no downtime. Due to its unique spreadability when injected into the skin, Profhilo requires small injections in only 10 selected bio-aesthetic points which minimizes risk to blood vessels and nerves. The product then diffuses throughout the layers of the skin and exerts its effects. Due to the unique injection technique, most people can go back to their daily activity immediately after injection with minimal downtime.

The result? A dewy, plump complexion with a firmer and better-lifted contour, enhanced hydration and better tissue and scarring repair. Typically, 2 treatments are done 1 month apart and effects can be observed after the second treatment. They gradually improve over time and can last between 6 and 9 months. For best results, Profhilo is recommended to be administered twice a year.

For those who are looking for a more striking and significant improvement, Profhilo can be combined with other treatments such as skin boosters, Rejuran healer and even lasers for better results. Profhilo is best for anyone over 30 who wants to improve tired, dull and ageing skin.

In Singapore, Profhilo injections are provided only in accredited medical aesthetic clinics. When having your Profhilo treatment or products, always look out for the Neoasia Authenticity Sticker. Only with the authenticity sticker can you be assured that the product is delivered via pharmaceutical cold chain logistics at all times. Due to the unique nature of the Profhilo product, optimal product integrity can only be assured if it is delivered from the point of manufacture to your skin within the approved temperatures at all times.

This is one of the most commonly asked questions by patients when it comes to skin injectables. If you happen to not know any of the treatments on the title, you can refer to one of our posts here:

Why did we compare these treatments?

These 3 treatments are similar in a few ways, and to the layperson, it is also these similarities that confuse us to think that they are the same:

  1. They are all injectable treatments, usually delivered in the form of multiple injections on the skin of the face either manually or with an injector.
  2. They improve ageing skin which typically is plagued with dryness, fine lines, and laxity.
  3. They do not change the shape of our faces.
  4. Profhilo and Skinboosters both contain hyaluronic acid (HA) like dermal fillers, but due to structural differences, they do not add to volume in the face.

So, which treatment is the best?

Well, there is no right answer to this question. Profhilo is not better than skin boosters and vice versa, and the same applies to Rejuran. The right question to ask rather is:

“Which is the best treatment for me?”

All 3 treatments have their own special qualities and have been proven to be effective in their respective domains, giving significant results if done properly. More importantly, it is imperative and essential that the treatment that is chosen is best suited to target the patient’s unique skin needs and concerns. These concerns could be skin laxity, dryness, skin texture, pore size, scars, uneven skin tone or even all of them.

Below, we will first look at some basic differences between these 3 products:

Injectable HA contentPain ScoreFrequencyEffects

Skinboosters15-20mg/syringe1ml/syringe4/10 3-4 sessions, 1 month apartHydration Skin brightening
Rejuran Healer0mg2ml/syringe6/103-4 sessions, 1 month apartImprove skin quality Minimal hydrating effect

So, who will benefit from which treatment?

What are skinboosters and who will benefit most from Skinboosters?

Skinboosters are colloquially known as injectable moisturizers. It is a treatment that is based on multiple micro-injections of free hyaluronic acid into the skin to increase the hydration level in the skin. HA is a water-binding molecule that is able to hold up to 10,000 times its own weight in water. Common brands include Restylane Vital Lite and Teosyal Redensity I.

Patients who primarily want to improve skin dryness as well as want some glow and radiance to their complexion will benefit most from skinboosters.

A course of skin booster treatment involves 3 sessions one month apart to achieve long-lasting radiance. Downtime is typically 3-5 days due to the many injection points and depth of injection, typically as small injection marks, although bruising is also a possibility. Skin boosters can be administered via manual hand injections by your doctor or using an injector, or a mixture of both.

What is Rejuran and who will benefit most from Rejuran?

Rejuran is an injectable based on polynucleotide derived from Salmon DNA from Korea. Its main benefits are creating skin healing and collagen synthesis.

Patients who have acne scars, open pores, sensitive skin, uneven skin tone as well as redness stand to benefit most from Rejuran injections.

Rejuran injections also require a minimum of 3 sessions, one month apart. Due to the superficial nature of the injections – it is placed in the superficial layer (basement membrane) of the skin, patients get “mosquitoes bites-like bumps” immediately after treatment that typically take 24-48 hours to subside. Injection marks may remain for up to 3 days, but bruising is exceedingly rare.

What is Profhilo and who will benefit most from Profhilo?

Profhilo is an injectable based on both high molecular weight and low molecular weight HA which had been treated with just thermal reaction to form hybrid cooperative complexes. It works by multilevel dynamic remodelling, and hence in addition to skin hydration, it also stimulates collagen production and improves skin laxity.

Patients with ageing skin that is affected by both dryness, laxity and loss of elasticity with early sagging will benefit most from Profhilo treatment.

Profhilo requires 2 sessions one month apart due to the presence of cooperative hybrid complexes which renders it more resistant to hyaluronidase breakdown.

Profhilo also has the advantage of requiring only 5 injection points on each side of the face using the Bio-Aesthetic Points (BAP) technique which means the treatment only causes minimal downtime in the form of swelling over the injection points that usually subside within the day. In all 3 treatments, Profhilo has the least downtime due to this.

Below is a summary table comparing the 3 products.

So, which treatment is right for you?

This really depends on your skin concern and what you are looking to achieve with treatment. There is no “one size fits all” solution in aesthetic practice and it is always advisable to speak in detail with your doctor about what you want to achieve.
