Laser Treatment for Pearly Penile Papules

If you notice pearly looking growths on the glans of penis, do not panic. These growths are known as pearly penile papules (PPP).

Pearly penile papules are benign growths on the head and neck of the penis. They are really common and they affect up to 20% of men. They usually appear as skin-coloured, smooth rounded bumps arranged in concentric rings or parallel rows.

Sometimes, they may be mistaken for sexually transmitted genital warts. PPP are not warts. They are simply prominent glands and they are completely harmless.

Do I need to remove them?

Pearly penile papules are harmless.

Treatment is not necessary unless you or your partner are bothered by the cosmetic appearance.

How do I remove them?

PPP can be removed by laser or electrosurgery treatment. It is important to consult a doctor for a professional assessment and treatment.

Is it safe?

Removal of PPP is very safe and effective if done by trained doctors. Risk of skin infection is very low with proper post procedure care.

Is it painful?

Treatment is very tolerable for most people. A numbing cream is applied to the treatment area prior to the treatment to minimise any discomfort. You can resume work and daily activities immediately after treatment.

What happens after treatment?

You will be prescribed a topical medication to be applied over the treatment area for the next 1-2 weeks. Follow up is usually arranged in about 3-4 weeks.

Wounds are expected to heal within 1-2 weeks.

1 treatment is usually sufficient to remove all the papules.

Will they recur?

Recurrence is possible but rare. If they recur, they can be removed again.

Pearly penile papules can be removed safely by trained doctors.
