How does botox work?

Botulinum toxin or commonly know as botox is a natural, purified protein derived from bacteria. It has the the ability to temporarily block the secretion of chemical that is responsible for activating the sweat glands. By doing so, it can “turn off” sweating at the area where it has been injected.

How is it done?

Drops of botox is injected just under the skin throughout the area of excessive sweating using a small needle. Multiple injections are required.

Which area does it work best?

Botox treatment for excessive sweating works best for underarm and palms. Sweaty face can also benefit from botox treatment but there is a higher risk of side effects. Botox can be used for sweaty soles but it is not as effective.

Is it painful?

Most people tolerate the procedure very well. A numbing cream is given prior to injection to minimize pain. Sometimes, local anaesthesia may be required for palms and soles to minimize pain further. The needles we use to inject are extremely tiny. You will need multiple injections on each site to yield the best results.

How effective is Botox?

Botox has been shown to result in 82 – 87% decrease in sweating if used in underarm, and 80 – 90% if used on the palms. However, only 50% of patients are satisfied with the results if used on the soles or face.

How quickly does it work?

You may notice improvement in sweating approximately 2 to 4 days after treatment with full effects usually noted within 1-2 weeks.

How long does the effect last?

It generally lasts for 4 to 6 months, after which time you will need repeated treatment to maintain the efficacy of the treatment.

Is it safe?

Statistics from published research studies have shown that repeated treatment with Botox is safe and effective for excessive sweating. Botox treatment consistently results in meaningful and long-lasting improvements.

There are some potential complications but rare:

Bleeding from injection – this is common but harmless.

You may experience some redness, swelling and bruising at the injection sites but they will disappear in 1-2 weeks.

If used on palms, it can potentially cause temporary weakness in the hands.

If used on face, it can potentially cause asymmetry of the face especially on the forehead.

Such complications, however, are always temporary.
